From the Dark Laboratory… Part 2!

Sifting through the Internet Archive I found public domain movies. Some of them were classics other’s were so horrible nobody wanted to reclaim the copyright. I figured I’d take em’ all and make an insanely awesome movie mash up.

The style I’m going for is something with a sort of comic book feel to it. I really like the water color style that’s used in comics like Meltdown or Arkham Asylum.

So I made this out of “The Brain that Wouldn’t Die”.

The basic break down of how I did it in Adobe After Effects:

Step 1.
Used Paint Tool to color in face and eyes. Preferred the Soft Round 65 pixel brush.
Set on Color Mode. Left all the other setting alone. Made sure not to lift Digitizer Pen until it was all painted in, as not to create to many Paint Effects layers. Had to tweak the position and scale setting on the brush effects a little bit because the video is a pan in shot.

Step 2.
For the washed out color look made two duplicates of the video. Added Hue/Saturation and Luma Key filters to both videos. Gave the first video a light red brown color, and the second a faded mint green. Use Luma Key to make sure the red video only covers the background, and the green the foreground. Grouped videos in a comp. Set the comps mode to color and gave it an opacity of 30%.

Step 3.
For the finishing touches. Made four different Adjustment layers. Find Edges (which gives it the water color like grain) Photo Filter (to warm the colors a bit) Curves (minor adjustments to contrast), Channel Mixer (to blend and bring out the colors). Their modes are set to Overlay, Soft Light, Luminosity, and Color.

Step 4.
In Adobe Photoshop used some nifty brushes to make a paper like texture image. Exported it as a PNG (with alpha) and imported into After Effects. In After Effects I made it the very top layer and set it’s mode to Overlay.

If you didn’t understand a word of that, don’t worry I’ll be making in depth video tutorials after it’s alive and munching your brains.
If you know some other techniques or have some suggestions, feel free to leave a comment.

And loads of thank yous to the many of you who did! I love you with all my hearts!<3<3
